This photo of the interior of Hagia Sophia was taken in Istanbul, Turkey, last June. Originally a Byzantine church, then a mosque, now a museum, Hagia Sophia is an extraordinary edifice, which, even under reconstruction with scaffolding and netting, gives one a sense of otherworldliness. The stairs and light make you feel like you are being transported to heaven.
