RICHARD "Rick" LEE SCHMELYUN, SR., 71, of Taneytown, formerly of Silver Run and Arbutus, MD, entered into God's eternal care Monday March 24, 2008, surrounded by his family. Born September 28, 1936 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late William J. and Katherine Schmelyun. He was the loving husband of Shirley (Flanagan) for more than 51 years. Rick owned his own paving business for many years, and he was a heavy equipment operator for most of his life. He was a well-known local race car driver for many years. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Donna & Matt Southard of Sykesville, MD, Sherri & Mike Rose of Hanover, PA; sons, Rick Jr. & Rhonda, of New Oxford, PA, Tim of Westminster, MD, Lee & Kathy, of Glenville, PA; 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchilren.. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Donald of Ocala, FL, and Leroy of Glen Burnie, MD. Rick was pre-deceased by 4 brothers, 4 sisters, and 1 great-grandson, Camden. Rick has donated his body to medical science with hope that research will help find a cure for pancreatic cancer. A Memorial Service to celebrate Rick's life will be held at 2:00 pm on April 6, 2008 at St. Joseph's Church, Rt. 194, Taneytown, MD with the Rev. Samuel Garrett officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made in Rick's honor to The Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave. Westminster, MD 21157.
