Familiar foes, familiar score

After yesterday's game at Severn, John Carroll goalie Lauren McGehee's hands were still shaking.

The senior goalie was reliving one of the biggest saves of her career with 12 seconds left to preserve a 10-9 victory for the No. 3 Patriots over the No. 5 Admirals.

McGehee saved an 8-meter free-position shot from one of the Admirals' best attackers, Alex Priddy. On that play, the advantage is not in the goalie's favorthe goalie is at a disadvantage, but McGehee held her ground and blocked the shot.

"My heart was pounding in my chest," McGehee said. "I was just thinking I know that she's a great shooter and we had been watching out for her the entire game. [The shot] hit me right on my thigh. I just hoped it would hit me."

McGehee's 10th save ended another in a string of nailbiters between the rivals, including last season's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship, won by the Patriots, 10-9, in overtime. Their past three meetings have been decided by the same score.

While the Patriots' All-Metro duo of Ally Carey and Casey Ancarrow combined for seven goals, the Admirals began double-teaming them almost every time they touched the ball. That forced others to step up. Grace Gaeng scored her second goal and then fed Ancarrow for a 9-7 Patriots lead with 11:39 to go.

Priddy and All-Metro Josie Owen then answered for the Admirals (2-2, 0-1) to tie it at 9 with 5:13 left.

After Brittany Dashiell scored on a free position shot with 3:01 left, the Patriots stalled away more than a minute and a half before turning the ball over. Severn took four shots in the final minute - three carried wide.

"I'm not disappointed in the way we played," said Severn coach Renie Sotiropolous. "I thought we adjusted well to them. After we spotted them three goals, we made that adjustment (to double team Carey and Ancarrow). They are very talented players so we had to make sure our defense was as focused as possible and I thought they played well and our goalie (Hannah Hook, 11 saves) played well."
