Sander Beck no-hit No. 13 Severna Park yesterday, as unranked Severn upset the Falcons, 3-0, in Severna Park's Easter Tournament.
The Admirals of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference scored an unearned run in the first inning and got a two-run single by Chase Strom in the fifth to give Beck all the support he needed.
Beck, a 6-foot-2 senior right-hander headed to Maryland, used a fastball in the upper 80s and 90s, a changeup and a knuckle-curve to keep the Falcons (1-1) off balance. In recording his third career no-hitter, Beck (1-0) hit three batters and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to finish with eight strikeouts.
"I was getting some late sinking action on my fastball, and when I saw they were right on it and fouling it straight back, I would just throw a changeup to get them off balance," said Beck, who also had two hits, including a double.
"It's indescribable to no-hit them because I've grown up with all of these kids and they've always said, 'Why do you go to Severn, it's not a baseball school.' I thought about transferring to Severna Park for my senior year, but I decided not to."
Severn's third-year coach, Andy Canterna, said, "It was the biggest win we've had at Severn as a club."
Calvert Hall -- The No. 1 Cardinals arrived in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday for the National High School Baseball Classic but won't play their first game until tomorrow.
