1. Memphis

LOCATION -- Memphis, Tenn.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Conference USA tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 33-1, 3rd.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is its 20th appearance and third consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Chris Douglas-Roberts (6-6/Jr., 17.3 ppg); G Derrick Rose (6-3/Fr., 14.1 ppg).

THE BUZZ -- The Tigers breezed through its conference but own out-of-conference wins over Oklahoma, Connecticut, Southern California, Georgetown, Arizona and Gonzaga and their lone loss to in-state rival Tennessee ended the nation's longest home winning streak.

2. Texas

LOCATION -- Austin, Texas.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Big 12 Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 28-6, 5th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is its 26th appearance and 10th consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- G D.J. Augustin (6-0/Soph., 19.8 ppg, 5.7 apg); G A.J. Abrams (5-11/Jr., 16.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg); F Damion James (6-7/Soph., 12.9 ppg, 10.7 rpg).

THE BUZZ -- Despite having a roster of 10 underclassmen and the departure of last season's national Player of the Year, Kevin Durant, to the NBA, the Longhorns have thrived.

3. Stanford

LOCATION -- Stanford, Calif.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Pacific-10 Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 26-7, 14th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 15th appearance and 12th in 13 years.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Brook Lopez (7-0/Soph., 18.9 ppg, 8.2 rpg); G Anthony Goods (6-3/Jr., 10.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg); C Robin Lopez (7-0/Soph., 9.9 ppg, 2.2 bpg).

THE BUZZ -- Stanford is a highly underrated defensive team, fundamentally solid and leaves little to chance. Its size will give teams trouble. However, it is not a great shooting club.

4. Pittsburgh

LOCATION -- Pittsburgh.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Big East Conference tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 26-9, 15th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 20th appearance and seventh consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- F DeJuan Blair (6-7/Fr., 12.3 ppg, 9.5 rpg); G Levance Fields (5-10/Jr., 11.1 ppg, 5.4 apg); F Sam Young (6-6/Jr., 18.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg).

THE BUZZ -- The Panthers lost four of their last seven regular-season games, and that slump is cause for concern when you fill out your brackets.

5. Michigan State

LOCATION -- East Lansing, Mich.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Big Ten Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 25-8, 16th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 22nd appearance and 11th consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Raymar Morgan (6-7/Soph., 14.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg); G Drew Neitzel (6-0/Sr., 13.8 ppg, 4.1 apg).

THE BUZZ -- The Spartans had a 4-6 road record, but a 15-0 record at home made them one of the Big Ten's top teams.

6. Marquette

LOCATION -- Milwaukee.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Big East Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 24-9, 20th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 26th appearance and third consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Lazar Hayward (6-6/Soph., 12.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg); G Dominic James (5-11/Jr., 13.3 ppg, 4.3 apg); G Wesley Matthews (6-5/Jr., 11.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg); G Jerel McNeal (6-3/Jr., 13.6 ppg, 3.8 apg).

THE BUZZ -- The Golden Eagles have a very good backcourt, and that bodes well for them in this tournament.

7. Miami

LOCATION -- Coral Gables, Fla.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Atlantic Coast Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 22-10, 34th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is sixth appearance and first since 2002.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Jack McClinton (6-1/Jr., 17.4 ppg, 2.6 apg), G James Dews (6-3/Soph., 10.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg), F Dwayne Collins (6-8/Soph., 9.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg).

THE BUZZ -- The Hurricanes, picked to finish last in the ACC, have been one of college basketball's surprise teams throughout the season. In McClinton (Calvert Hall), they have a player capable getting on a hot streak and carrying them during a tournament run.

8. Mississippi State

LOCATION -- Starkville, Miss.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Southeastern Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 22-10, 39th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is ninth appearance and first since 2005.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Jamont Gordon (6-4/Jr., 17.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg); C Jarvis Varnado (6-9/Soph., 7.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg)

THE BUZZ -- The Bulldogs overcame a 5-5 start to earn their sixth SEC Western Division title since 1992.

9. Oregon

LOCATION -- Eugene, Ore.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Pacific-10 Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 18-13, 58th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is ninth appearance and first since 2003.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Maarty Leunen (6-9/Sr., 15.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg); G Malik Hairston (6-6/Sr., 16 ppg, 4.7 rpg); G Tajuan Porter (5-6/Soph., 13.6 ppg, 2.3 rpg).

THE BUZZ -- The Ducks are very quick and prefer an up-tempo game, but they have an inherent weakness in playing that way. They lack depth.

10. St. Mary's

LOCATION -- Moraga, Calif.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from West Coast Conference.

RECORD, RPI -- 25-6, 36th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is fifth appearance and first since 2005.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Patrick Mills (6-0/Fr., 14.4 ppg); F Diamon Simpson (6-7/Jr., 13.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg.); C Omar Samhan (6-11/Soph., 10.8 ppg, 7.4 rpg),

THE BUZZ -- The Gaels tied a school record with 25 wins, matching marks set during the 1988-89 and 2004-05 seasons.

11. Kentucky

LOCATION -- Lexington, Ky.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- At-large berth from Southeastern Conference,

RECORD, RPI -- 18-12, 57th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 49th appearance and 17th consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Joe Crawford (6-5/Sr., 17.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg); G Ramel Bradley (6-2/Sr., 16.0 ppg, 3.3apg).

THE BUZZ -- After one of the worst nonconference seasons in program history, Kentucky went 12-4 in SEC regular-season play to make the tournament.

12. Temple

LOCATION -- Philadelphia.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Atlantic 10 Conference tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 21-12, 48th

NCAA HISTORY -- This is 26th appearance and first since 2001.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Dionte Christmas (6-5/Jr. 20.3 ppg, 2.6 apg); G Mark Tyndale (6-5/Sr., 16.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg).

THE BUZZ -- Temple finished the regular-season on a four-game winning streak behind Christmas, who tied the league-high scoring average.

13. Oral Roberts

LOCATION -- Tulsa, Okla.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Summit League tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 24-8, 52nd.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is fifth appearance and third consecutive.

KEY PLAYERS -- G Robert Jarvis (5-11/Jr., 16.1 ppg); G Moses Ehambe (6-6/Sr., 11.7 ppg), G Adam Liberty (6-2/Sr., 9.7 ppg).

THE BUZZ -- The Golden Eagles survived the graduation of two 2,000-point scorers in Caleb Green and Ken Tutt to win their third consecutive Summit League tournament title.

14. Cornell

LOCATION -- Ithaca, N.Y.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Ivy League.

RECORD, RPI -- 22-5, 65th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is third appearance and first since 1988.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Ryan Wittman (6-6/Soph., 15.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg); G Louis Dale (5-11/Soph., 13.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

THE BUZZ -- The Big Red went undefeated through the Ivy League, coincidentally finishing the schedule with Penn and Princeton, the only other teams to do it in league history.

15. Austin Peay

LOCATION -- Clarksville, Tenn.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Ohio Valley Conference tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 24-10, 84th.

NCAA HISTORY -- This is sixth appearance and first since 2003.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Drake Reed (6-5/Jr., 15.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg); PG Derek Wright (5-9/Sr., 11.7 ppg, 4.7 apg); G Todd Babington (6-5/Sr., 11.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg)

THE BUZZ -- The Governors entered the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed, then shot 51 percent in the championship game.

16. Texas-Arlington

LOCATION -- Arlington, Texas.

HOW THEY GOT HERE -- Won Southland Conference tournament.

RECORD, RPI -- 21-11, 149th.

NCAA HISTORY -- First appearance.

KEY PLAYERS -- F Anthony Vereen (6-7/Jr., 12.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg); C Jermaine Griffin (6-9/Sr., 13.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg); G Rog'er Guignard (5-10/Fr., 10.5 ppg, 3.5 apg).

THE BUZZ -- This is Scott Cross' second season as Mavericks coach. He returned all five starters from last year, a season in which he used long road trips, in-season weight training and frequent lineup changes to prepare his program for this season.
