Darryle Dennis scored 19 points to lead Snow Hill of Worcester County to its third state title with a 92-75 win over Prince George's County's Surrattsville in the Class 1A state championship game yesterday at Comcast Center in College Park.
Surrattsville's Jamahl Brown led all scorers with 36 points. Snow Hill, which beat Dunbar in the semifinals, finished 26-0.
The Eagles led Surrattsville (12-12) from early in the game and built a 23-point lead at one point. The Hornets were able to cut the lead to 14 points late in the third quarter, but could get no closer.
The Eastern Shore school won its previous state titles in 1989 and 2001.
Springbrook 61, Thomas Stone 57 -- Springbrook of Montgomery County defeated Thomas Stone of Charles County for the Class 4A state title. It was the Cougars' third state title and first since 1988. After trailing 15 at halftime, and 11 going into the fourth quarter, Springbrook rallied to take the lead with 1:21 left in fourth. The Blue Devils (25-2) were led by Carl Garner, who had 23 points and six assists. Jamal Olasewere had 17 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Rodney Clark led the Cougars (24-3) with 24 points and four rebounds. Thomas Stone beat Parkville, 73-64, in the semifinals.
Girls
Pocomoke 66, Allegany 53 -- Pocomoke won its first state title in its 10th trip to the final four, beating Allegany in the Class 1A final at UMBC's RAC Arena. Ashley Bishop, whose three-pointer with 10 seconds left beat Digital Harbor in Wednesday's semifinal, scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Warriors (27-1). DeTonia DeGross scored 17 points for the Campers (24-3).
