Guardian Angels kickoff tomorrow

The Village of Lakeview will be hosting a kickoff Guardian Angels meeting at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at its Neighborhood Network Center, 833 Fisherman Lane, Edgewood.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is expected to attend the meeting. Sliwa began the organization in the 1970s as a way to deter crime on the New York City subway. The Guardian Angels is a volunteer foot-patrol organization.

High school reform presentation set

Council member Richard C. Slutzky will make a presentation regarding high school reform at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Board of Education meeting at the Harford County Public Schools A. A. Roberty Building at 102 S. Hickory Ave., Bel Air.

Slutzky said that he and County Council members have been receiving comments about the Comprehensive Secondary School Reform Plan from parents, students, teachers, guidance counselors and PTAs and wanted to present them to the Board of Education.

Several parents have criticized the methods of evaluating the school reform plan, which implemented longer class periods, required students to choose a career cluster and take a fourth math credit.

SARC volunteer training planned

The Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center Inc. will hold a SARC Helper training class for individuals who are interested in being a volunteer for the office and special projects.

Training classes will be offered from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Those interested should call for an application and to set up an interview.

This training does not involve working with clients. Shifts may vary and are flexible.

Arbor Day project scheduled

Harford County is seeking volunteers for the sixth annual Harford County Arbor Day Celebration and Conservation Project, to be held at 9 a.m. Friday.

Volunteers will be joined by various county officials in planting 900 tree seedlings and installing tree shelters.

Trees will be planted on a three-acre tract of land set along a tributary of Deer Creek. The planting site is located on the Scarboro Landfill property near Sandy Hook Road in Street.

Volunteers are asked to bring work boots and gloves, a hammer for driving in tree shelter stakes and a bag lunch. Parking will be available at the site and the planting will be held rain or shine.

Land preservation seminar planned

Harford County will sponsor an agricultural land preservation seminar that will include discussions on rural land use, preservation options, proposed protected areas, land trusts, tax benefits and property values on March 26 in Street.

Among the presenters are David Thompson, chairman of the county's Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board; William Amoss, administrator of the county's preservation program; a land planner; an attorney versed in estate planning; and a certified public accountant.

The seminar runs from 8 a.m. to noon at Highland Presbyterian Church, 701 Highland Road. Registration is requested.

Transit service at Abingdon complex

Harford Transit has announced that bus service is being extended to serve the Abingdon Catholic Charities Housing Complex on St. Clair Road in Abingdon, beginning March 31.

The new route will provide direct bus service to the complex from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.
