R. Calvert Ruff, 79

R. Calvert Ruff, a retired die maker and longtime Joppa resident, died of respiratory failure Sunday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Perry Point. He was 79.

Mr. Ruff was born and raised in Mathews County, Va., where he graduated from high school.

He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and received a medical discharge a year later. He then moved to Baltimore to be near family members.

He began working as a die maker in 1954 for Lord Baltimore Press. He left the company in 1979 and took a similar job at Alford Industries Inc., a rotogravure printing plant on Merchant Street in Baltimore.

He retired in 1991.

Mr. Ruff was an Orioles and Ravens fan.

He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where services were held yesterday.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Gloria Palmer; a daughter, Michelle Ruff of Joppa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Stephanie Y. Ruff, died in the late 1960s.
