A new homeowner's to-do list

The Baltimore Sun

So you've bought a house - now what?

New homeowners say they could use a few pointers about, well, being new homeowners. Here's a short list, most of which also applies if you're moving from one apartment to another:

Update your address. The U.S. Postal Service lets you fill out a change-of-address form at https:--moversguide.usps.com.

Sign up for utility service. Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (410-685-0123) says to make your request at least three business days before you move. While you're at it, don't forget phone, Internet and any other home-based services you'll want.

Register to vote. The Maryland State Board of Elections explains how - and answers other voting questions - at elections.state.md.us/voter_registration.

Apply for the Homestead Tax Credit, which puts a ceiling on property tax increases once you've been in the property a full fiscal year (meaning July 1 through June 30). If you bought your home this year, you have 180 days to apply. (State legislators may end up repealing this requirement, but it hasn't happened yet.)

Not from Maryland? Once you move in, you have 60 days to apply for a Maryland driver's license if you want to capitalize on the fact that you already have one from another state.

Research your surroundings. City residents can check out Live Baltimore Home Center's Web site, livebaltimore.com, for information about neighborhoods and a useful "Now That You're Here" list.

Have pets? Get them licensed.

Inquire about trash and recycling pickup. Baltimore County, for instance, suggests calling 410-887-2000 to have the recycling schedule sent to you.

Double-check your paperwork. Make sure your mortgage company is escrowing enough money for property taxes.

Renovating? Find out what work requires permits.
