Former Dunbar standout Dante Blanton-Holcombe has been spectacular for the Lincoln University men's basketball team this season.
The 6-foot-2 shooting guard averaged 23.6 points for the Lions, who struggled to a 4-22 season in the transition from NCAA Division III to Division II.
His scoring average would have placed him second in the nation in Division II if the Lions had been eligible for scoring honors. The Pennsylvania school has applied for membership next season in the Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
He scored 30 or more points five times this season, including 49 in a 108-106 overtime loss at Saint Paul's College.
Blanton-Holcombe helped charge up the crowd with flying dunks and long-range shooting; he averages 11.5 three-point attempts per game.
He was known as Dante Holcombe at Dunbar. He added the name Blanton to recognize his mother.
Jacob debuts
Freshman right-hander Kevin Jacob, a 6-6 middle reliever from Parkville, has turned in two nearly perfect performances for Georgia Tech.
He debuted last week by pitching three shutout innings and striking out four as the No. 19 Yellow Jackets defeated Georgia Southern, 1-0, in 10 innings. Jacob struck out three in one inning in his second outing, giving him seven in four innings. Opponents are hitting .154 against him.
Georgia Tech has won seven of its first eight games.
Meisenberg is tops
Franklin & Marshall junior Sarah Meisenberg (Severn) was chosen women's basketball Player of the Year in the Centennial Conference.
Meisenberg, 5-8, averaged 18.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists, shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range.
Franklin & Marshall (19-7) was the top seed in the Centennial tournament but lost to Gettysburg, 75-70, in the semifinals.
Another Baltimore-area player selected to the All-Centennial team was 5-11 Gettysburg sophomore Courtney Fields (St. Paul's), who averaged 10.8 points and 7.1 rebounds. Fields scored 23 points in the tournament championship game, but the Bullets lost to Muhlenberg, 80-65.
Trio contributes
Pennsylvania junior attackman Craig Andrzejewski (St. Paul's) was the points leader for the Quakers (1-1) after two games with six (one goal, five assists).
Sophomore defenseman Joe Kelly (Loyola) and junior midfielder Brian Weiss (McDonogh) each had six ground balls in the first two games.
