8 families forced from homes by fire
Eight families were displaced yesterday morning by a fire that severely damaged the apartment building where they lived in Parkville, a spokesman for the Red Cross of Central Maryland said.
The Red Cross was assisting the families that fled the fire, said the spokesman, Douglas Lent. Red Cross caseworkers at the scene offered shelter to the eight families, he said, but all except possibly one had found places to stay with relatives or friends.
A dispatcher with the Baltimore County Fire Department said the fire at 7705 Hillendale Road was reported at 10:39 a.m. and that there was one minor injury. He could not say whether the injured person was a firefighter or a resident of the apartment building.

Woman, 19, held in stabbing death
SILVER SPRING --A 19-year-old woman has been arrested in the killing of ayoung man in Silver Spring.
Montgomery County police said 18-year-old Sean Cope of Washington was killed Friday night in an apparent fight between two groups.
Adrienne Cravens was charged with first-degree murder yesterday in the death of Cope, who investigators think knew her. She was being held without bail.
Cope apparently was stabbed during the fight, police said. The motive was being investigated.

Robotics contest at Naval Academy
Robots will swarm Annapolis this week as high school teams from Maryland and nearby states compete in the three-day First Robotics Cheasapeake Regional tournament.
Starting Thursday, the teams will race their hand-crafted robots around an oval track at the Naval Academy, while attempting to toss large inflated balls over a 6-foot hurdle. More than 60 robotics teams from Maryland, Virginia, Washington and elsewhere have registered.
The First series was started in 1992 by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway personal transporter, to promote math and engineering among American students. The Annapolis event is a qualifier for the national First Championship, scheduled for mid-April in Atlanta.
Hadley Field House will be the venue for the regional tournament. Admission is free, but anyone 16 or older will need photo identification for admission to the Naval Academy grounds. Pay parking will be available at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
