Informal session with school board

The Board of Education of Howard County regularly holds Coffee & Conversation sessions at schools throughout the county. The next session is scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the media center at Fulton Elementary School, 11600 Scaggsville Road.

These meetings provide an opportunity to talk informally with board members. The meetings are held in various regions of the county.

Technology plan for the 21st century

The Howard County Public School System is in the process of developing a five-year comprehensive technology plan to prepare for learning in the 21st century. A community meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 26 at the Atholton High School media center for residents to provide input, ideas and direction for the technology plan.

$2,000 scholarship for sports player

The Howard County Youth Program awards a $2,000 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior who has participated in a sports program (baseball, basketball, volleyball or softball) sponsored by HCYP. The scholarship, in its 15th year, commemorates the life of Christopher Kelley, an HCYP baseball player who died in a bicycle accident.

Summer enrichment courses offered

The Summer Institutes for Talent Development, offered through the Gifted and Talented Office and the Office of Advanced Programs and Fine Arts, are accepting registrations for summer courses to be held at Homewood Center, 10914 Route 108 in Ellicott City.

Session I runs from June 30 until July 11, and Session II runs July 14-25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The courses are for advanced-level learners entering grades two-12 in the areas of technology, science, language arts, fine arts and mathematics. These are interest-based, hands-on enrichment opportunities.

Summer camp for girls is expanded

The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County has expanded its residential summer camp, Journey, to include 25 girls who will enter the eighth and ninth grades in the fall and 25 girls who will enter the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

Maryland Leadership Workshops Inc. will operate the camp, as it has for the past two years. The organization has been providing leadership training programs for Maryland middle and high school students for more than 50 years.

The camp will be held July 20-26 at Washington College in Chestertown. Student delegates to the program will live in the college dorms and eat in the cafeteria.

The cost is $550. Financial assistance is available. Applications are available in middle and high school guidance offices and at www.womensgivingcircle.org. Applications must be submitted by Friday. Information: Colleen Taggart-D'Agrosa, 301-854-1107.
