COLLEGE PARK -- Owings Mills junior Avi Friedman, 32-0 at 103 pounds this season, was feeling some pressure earlier in the week about carrying his unbeaten record into yesterday's Class 2A-1A state tournament at College Park.
However, once Friedman got on the mat, the pressure faded as he went into the "zone" that has carried him all season. Friedman breezed through the preliminaries and quarterfinals and will take on Brandon Gain of Harford Tech in today's semifinals.
"My goal wasn't to go undfeated undefeated this year," Friedman said. "I didn't care if I lost, as long as I could win states and be nationally ranked. Our team is like a family."
Through the quarterfinals, Glenelg was leading all teams and placed five wrestlers in the semifinals.
In the Class 2A-1A ranks, the 112-pound class is considered to be the deepest. Hammond's Dylan Gillett is matched up with Lex Ozias of Southern-Garrett. And in a rematch of last year's state final, Scott Mantua, the defending champion from River Hill, will take on Chad Strube of Middletown. Four metro area wrestlers will square off in the 119-pound semifinals. Cameron Hobin of South Carroll and Earl Eppard of Lansdowne will battle, and Brendan Conway of Glenelg will take on Chris Antrobus of Centur.
In other matches, George Scheffel of Southern-Garrett will defend his title against Josh Halper of Hammond at 125, and Brian Marcoux of Glenelg will square off against Tyler Strube of Middletown.
At 130, Nathan White, a state runner-up from River Hill, will meet Eastern Tech's Dustin Peddicord. Danny Bichner of Glenelg, a state runner-up last year, takes on Tommy Lavey of Overlea at 135.
Glenelg's Chris Stinnett, who was a runner-up at 140 last year, will wrestle Tyler White of Walkersville. Jovan Saunders of Oakland Mills will take on defending champion Matt Jackson of Rising Sun at 145.
Owings Mills' Tony Mack will defend his state title at 160 against Robbie Mies of Williamsport.
