A three-alarm fire that started in a materials research laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground yesterday was extinguished within 20 minutes, authorities said. There were no injuries.

APG firefighters were notified of the fire at the Rodman Building, where the research is conducted, at 3:50 p.m., said George Mercer, APG spokesman. The fire started in a laboratory and went up to the ceiling and the roof, Mercer said.

"With the wind what it is, they were concerned that it not get out of hand," Mercer said. "They managed to control it and get it put out quickly."

Volunteers from Aberdeen and Havre de Grace fire companies assisted the APG firefighters, and the fire was under control by about 4:10 p.m., Mercer said.

The cause is under investigation, he said. There was no damage estimate.
