Talk will focus on athletes' parents

Diane Schumacher, director of athletics at Howard Community College, will speak on "Parenting Your Young Athlete" at 7 p.m. today at the central library in Columbia.

The talk grew out of her research, for an article published in a peer-reviewed journal, on ways parents involve themselves in their children's on-field performance.

Schumacher has had a successful career in fast-pitch softball and subsequent coaching positions. In addition, she has been inducted into the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame.

The program is part of the Choose Civility project. Registration: www.hclibrary.org, or 410-313-7860.

At the fair, students can look for jobs, volunteer opportunities, camps, and classes. New this year are vendors of services for teens ranging from study skills to prom dresses. Workshops on interviewing skills, how to fill out an application, tips for succeeding on the job and on managing money will run every half-hour in the media center.

There will be two "Dress for Success" fashion shows. Participants will receive a folder with tips on the topics covered in the workshops. The Long Reach High School Boosters concession stand will be open for food and refreshments.

Get information on bus service

Questions about public bus transportation in Howard County will be answered at the Transportation Advocates meeting at 7:45 a.m. March 11 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way in Columbia.

"State of Howard Transit" will be presented at the meeting by a panel of those responsible for providing public transportation in Howard County. The panel will also answer questions about the current status and future plans for bus service.

The information will be useful for transit customers and for planning service as development of downtown Columbia proceeds. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 7:30 a.m. Information: 410-992-1997 or 410-997-0793.

Help for elderly in emergencies

The seminars, "Preparing the Important Document Binder," are sponsored by CERN and the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program of Howard County, and will include information on documents to have ready if it is ever necessary to leave home in a hurry.

Those who attend are asked to take key documents, such as a copy of a driver's license, marriage license and deed to the house that they are willing to copy at the workshop to begin to create their own "Important Document Binder."
