Matthew Edward Russ Sr., a retired soft drink executive, died of pneumonia Feb. 24 at Howard County General Hospital. The Ellicott City resident was 85.
Mr. Russ was born in Newark, N.J. He enlisted in the Army during World War II, served as a radio operator and attained the rank of sergeant, according to family members, who also said he saw action on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge.
After working for Canada Dry beverages in New York, Philadelphia, Hartford, Conn., and Miami, Mr. Russ moved to Howard County about 20 years ago and worked for the 7-Up Bottling Co. of Baltimore.
He was active in the Order of the Sons of Italy in America of Howard County.
Services were held yesterday in Ellicott City.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, the former Ann Wagner; two sons, Joseph M. Russ of Mohnton, Pa., and Matthew E. Russ Jr. of Greensboro N.C., two daughters, Theresa Brewer of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Ann Margaret Russ of Baltimore; a sister, Theresa Veronsky of Belle Meade, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
