Shelling out: Tasty crabs cost a pretty penny

The Baltimore Sun

Just as Marylanders love their blue crabs, the denizens of South Florida are quite proud of their signature crustacean - the stone crab.

The hard-shelled crab legs are served either hot (with drawn butter) or cold (with a mustard dip) from Oct. 15 to May 15. The most famous place to find them is Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach, where Hungarian immigrant Joe Weiss first started serving seafood nearly a century ago.

Joe's Web site points out that as recently as 1963, you could buy stone crabs wholesale for 30 cents per dozen. Today, you can have Joe's deliver dinner for two right to your doorstep for a mere $165.95, including shipping.

Of course, I won't have to go to such lengths, provided Joe's will accept my company credit card.
