Vigilance to run D.C. health agency

Washington Mayor Adrian M. Fenty has hired Baltimore County's top health officer, Dr. Pierre Vigilance, to be director of the District of Columbia's health department.

"Dr. Vigilance brings us an energy that's unparalleled in his field, and a wealth of experience in dealing with urban health issues," Fenty said in a news release. "We're excited to have him on board."

Vigilance, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, had been Baltimore County's director of health since 2005. He worked to improve access to health care for the uninsured and to stop smoking among young people.

Before joining Baltimore County, Vigilance ran disease research programs as an assistant commissioner at the Baltimore Health Department.

Police name driver killed by officers

Baltimore County police yesterday released the identity of a man who was shot and killed by officers Friday.

Taevon Jerald Cann, 25, of the 700 block of Seawall Road in Essex was shot by the officers at the BP gas station at Merritt Boulevard and Dunmanway about 5:30 p.m., according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives had been following Cann's vehicle, a dark-colored sedan, as part of a criminal investigation. When the car turned into the gas station and stopped at a pump, detectives and uniformed officers surrounded the vehicle and ordered Cann out of the car.

Cann put the car in reverse, attempting to hit a uniformed officer, police said. As the officer jumped out of the way, Cann's car crashed into the side of a police car, causing an officer who was trying to get out of the cruiser to be knocked to the ground. Several officers then began to shoot at Cann.

An unidentified passenger was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He was charged with unrelated crimes that are being investigated, according to police.
