Get tips on life in middle school

Parents of middle-school students and soon-to-be middle-school students who are looking for tips on dealing with the development of adolescents can find helpful information in a workshop starting this week at Anne Arundel Community College.

The 10-hour course, sponsored by the Parenting Center at AACC and Anne Arundel County public schools, is divided into five two-hour sessions. Parents will hear from experts and learn about strategies for assisting their children. Sessions begin Tuesday.

3 Mids honored for academic skills

USA Today has recognized three Naval Academy midshipmen for their academic achievements.

Midshipmen 1st Class Victoria Moore, 21, of Burke, Va., and William Eucker, 21, of Denver, Colo., were recently selected to the All-USA Academic Second Team 2008. Midshipman 1st Class Blaine Moore, 21, of Memphis, Tenn., was selected for honorable mention.

The nationwide competition honors 20 students for each of three all-academic teams based on their grades, academic rigor, leadership and extracurricular activities.

Victoria Moore maintains a 4.0 grade-point average as an information technology major with a concentration in national security affairs and a minor in French. She is a member of the academy's varsity cross-country, indoor and outdoor track teams and is the 20th Company commander.

Eucker is a physics major with the highest Order of Merit of the class of 2008. His course work includes Arabic studies and physical chemistry. As part of his participation in the Trident Scholar program, he has studied ways to replace chemical carbon dioxide scrubbers in nuclear submarines with ionic liquids. Upon graduation, he will join the submarine community.

Blaine Moore is a Rhodes Scholar and ranked first in his class with a 4.0 GPA. A chemistry major and a Trident Scholar, Moore is studying the improved synthesis of a class of organic chemicals with demonstrated antimicrobial and tumor-killing capacities. Moore is also a member of the intramural cross-country team and the Power-Lifting Club. After his two years of study at Oxford University, Moore will attend medical school to become a Navy physician.

Students' art shown at Arundel Center

Artwork by students in the YWCA's STAR Academy After-School Program is on display in the Arundel Center, 44 Calvert St. in Annapolis, through March 28.

The Arts Council of Anne Arundel arranges for local artists to display their work in the Arundel Center. During the spring, displays arranged by the council will feature area students' artwork.

The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County operates the STAR Academy After-School Program. The program aims to improve school attendance and academic performance by providing academic tutoring, health and wellness training, and recreational activities to students with academic, emotional and social challenges.
