Master class workshop in hip-hop to raise funds

Hip-hop choreographer Honey Rockwell, who has appeared in videos with stars such as Kanye West and Will Smith, will lead a Hip-Hop Master Class Workshop on Saturday and March 9 at Marriotts Ridge High School to benefit the MRHS dance program spring trip.

The Saturday workshop, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is open to students in grades six to eight. The March 9 workshop, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is open to those of high school age or older. No dance experience is required. The cost is $40 for each workshop, which will be held at the dance studio at Marriotts Ridge, 12100 Woodford Drive, Marriottsville.

Concert by jazz band from Glenelg High

The award-winning Glenelg High School Jazz Band will perform its annual concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the school's auditorium. This will be the last concert before renovations to the auditorium.

Saxophonist Ron Diehl is the guest soloist. He is a former saxophone soloist with the Navy "Commodores" and has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder.

Tickets are $7, and the proceeds go toward the band's spring competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

50th anniversary fete for Glenelg High

Glenelg High School will hold its 50th anniversary celebration from 6 p.m. to midnight April 5 at the Howard County Fairgrounds Main Exhibition Hall. Classes from 1959 to 2008 are invited.

Tickets are $40 and include: barn dance, door prizes, games and auctions, mechanical bull, pit beef and turkey, pulled pork, salads and desserts. Draft beer, wine and sodas will be served, and there will be a cash liquor bar. Music will be provided by Checkered Past.

Parents' workshop to help kids write

The River Hill PTSA will hold a parent workshop "Improving Writing: A Parent's Guide" in the River Hill Media Center at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Parents will be given practical suggestions for helping students become more successful writers. Recommendations will draw upon an understanding of individual learning styles, knowledge of the writing process and commonly used methods for teaching writing.

Around town

Construction halted -- Construction of the roundabout at Brighton Dam and Ten Oaks roads in Clarksville has been temporarily halted. Construction is expected to resume next month as temperatures rise. The project is expected to be completed by spring.
