Barry Jon Goodman, a public insurance adjuster who represented clients seeking insurance claims, died of a heart attack Monday at Maryland General Hospital. The Bolton Hill resident was 44.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Pikesville, he was a graduate of the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va. He earned an associate's degree at Montgomery College in Rockville and had a degree in finance from what was then Towson State University. He became a certified professional public adjuster in 1990.

He joined a family business, Goodman-Gable-Gould Adjusters International Co., in 1985 and represented parties resolving claims with insurance companies. He worked with clients after natural disasters, including hurricanes Hugo, Andrew, Wilma and Jean and the 1993 summer floods.

He served on the board of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters. He also served on the Ryan White Consortium Board and was a past treasurer of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and spoke several nights a week helping others battle substance abuse problems.

Survivors include his partner of 19 years, Jeffrey Hill of Baltimore; his parents, William R. and Alice Katzenstein Goodman of Baltimore; a brother, Harvey Goodman of Potomac; a sister, Laurie Stein of Baltimore; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held yesterday in Pikesville.
