Residents' views on budgets sought
County residents will have one more chance Thursday to tell County Executive Ken Ulman and Budget Director Raymond S. Wacks what they want or don't want to see in the operating and capital budgets for fiscal 2009.
Residents can submit testimony electronically ahead of time at www.howardcountymd.gov. People who want to speak in person may sign up in person starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Banneker Room, the County Council chamber in the George Howard Building in Ellicott City.. The hearing begins at 7:30 p.m.
Talk to focus on parents of athletes
Diane Schumacher, director of athletics at Howard Community College, will speak on "Parenting Your Young Athlete" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Library in Columbia.
The talk grew out of her research, for an article published in a peer-reviewed journal, on ways parents involve themselves in their children's on-field performance.
Schumacher has had a successful career in fast-pitch softball and subsequent academic postings in coaching. In addition, she has been inducted into the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame.

Job fair March 8 at Long Reach High HC DrugFree's Teen Job and Volunteer Fair, sponsored by Howard County General Hospital, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 8 at Long Reach High School in Columbia.
Glenelg jazz band to perform Friday The award-winning Glenelg High School Jazz Band will be perform its annual concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the school's auditorium. This will be the last concert before renovations to the auditorium.
Saxophonist Ron Diehl will be the guest soloist. He is a former saxophone soloist with the Navy Commodores and has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder.
Tickets are $7. Proceeds go toward the band's spring competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Hip-hop workshop to benefit dancers
Hip-hop choreographer Honey Rockwell, who has appeared in videos with Kanye West and Will Smith, will lead a Hip-Hop Master Class Workshop on Saturday and March 9 at Marriotts Ridge High School to benefit the MRHS dance program spring trip.
The Saturday workshop, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is open to students in grades six to eight. The March 9 workshop, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., is open to those of high school age or older. No dance experience is required. The cost is $40 for each workshop, which will be held at the dance studio at Marriotts Ridge, 12100 Woodford Drive in Marriottsville.

Seminars focus on emergencies
Free one-hour seminars designed to help older adults prepare for unexpected emergencies will be offered at 1 p.m. March 11 at the Ellicott City Senior Center (410-313-1400); and at 10:30 a.m. April 15 at the Longwood Senior Center (410-313-7217).
The seminars, "Preparing the Important Document Binder," are sponsored by CERN and the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program of Howard County, and will include information on documents to have ready if it is ever necessary to leave home in a hurry.
Those who attend are asked to bring key documents, such as a copy of a driver's license, marriage license and deed to the house that they are willing to copy at the workshop to begin to create their own "Important Document Binder."
Program encourages physical activity
Registration for the fourth annual "Get Active Howard County" program is open. The 10-week health initiative is designed to encourage residents to become more active and to make them aware of the benefits of including 30 minutes of physical activity in their day at least five days a week.
The program, which will kick off with an event from noon to 4 p.m. April 5 at the Supreme Sports Club, is free and open to anyone living or working in the county. The program runs from April 7 through June 15.
Participants will be asked to keep track of their physical activity minutes online (www.getactivehowardcounty.org) or on a paper log, available at Howard County libraries or at village centers.

HCC sponsoring New York trip
The Howard Community College Office of Student Life will sponsor a trip March 8 to New York City. Riders who purchase tickets in advance should arrive no later than 7:45 a.m. at the Smith Theatre parking lot; the bus will return by midnight.
The trip, which costs $35 for students and $45 for others, is open to everyone. Tickets to the Broadway play Legally Blonde are available for $125 for HCC students and $140 for nonstudents (price includes the cost of transportation). College alumni with a valid lifetime membership card are eligible to receive student prices.
Tickets are available at the HCC Bookstore. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Sports Hall of Fame nominations sought
County Executive Ken Ulman has announced that nomination forms are available for the county's 2008 Community Sports Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Department of Recreation and Parks.
The hall celebrates people who have gained prominence or who have, as athletes, coaches, managers, officials or behind-the-scenes contributors, made substantial contributions to community recreational sports in Howard County.
The deadline for nominations is March 17.
Nominees must have lived in Howard County while they made their contributions to sports in the county or have devoted their efforts to community sports primarily in the county.
Forms are available at 410-313-4711, at county library branches or at www.howardcountymd.gov/RAP. They must be postmarked by March 17 and mailed or delivered to Recreation and Parks Sports Hall of Fame, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia 21046-1677.
The Community Sports Hall of Fame at Recreation and Parks Headquarters is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Search set to begin for CA president
The Columbia Association's board of directors has invited residents to share their thoughts on the background, experience and qualifications the next CA president should have.
The search for the next president will begin soon, and the board is requesting suggestions for a job description.
