COLLEGE PARK -- A few people asked Jerome Burney about his choice of jersey numbers when he showed up at Maryland in the fall of 2006. At first, Burney didn't fully understand the fuss because the number (32) was picked randomly. Burney knew the legendary Julius Erving once wore it, but not Joe Smith.

One of those who educated Burney about his number was assistant coach Keith Booth, who came in as a freshman as part of the same recruiting class as Smith, the last Maryland player to wear it.
