Dr. Joseph McKechnie, a retired Baltimore dentist, died of cancer Monday at his Towson home. He was 84.

Born and raised in Cumberland, he earned a degree at what was then Potomac College in Herndon, Va., and served during World War II in the Army, where he received training as a dental technician. After the war, he graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School, where he later taught restorative prosthodonthic dentistry.

In 1952, he opened a practice in the Marylander Apartments on St. Paul Street and later had a practice in Columbia. He retired from a practice on York Road in Timonium in early 1995.

He was a member of the Baltimore Association of Dental Surgeons, the Suburban Study Club and other dental societies. A boater and bicyclist, he belonged to the Baltimore Yacht Club.

Services will be held at noon tomorrow at Central Presbyterian Church, 7308 York Road.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, the former Priscilla Storms; two daughters, Susan Tucker and Leigh Farrell, both of Towson; and 11 grandchildren. His first wife of nearly 33 years, the former Ruth Fradiska, died in 1983. A son, William McKechnie, died in 1992.
