COLLEGE PARK -- Broadneck coach Colleen Parr Winans stood by the pool holding the state championship trophy with a smile that just wouldn't go away.

Doug McWhorter led a balanced performance by the Bruins boys, who captured the Class 4A-3A state swimming title last night at the University of Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center.

"The kids worked so hard this year," Winans said. "They constantly delivered ... and Doug is amazing. He's just a versatile swimmer."

Broadneck (14-0-1 in the regular season) scored 225 points, beating Urbana (193), South River (186) and several others. The Bruins also won the Anne Arundel County and regional crowns.

McWhorter won the 50-yard freestyle (22.35 seconds) and 100 freestyle (48.75). He also swam on the victorious 400 freestyle relay with James and Eric Robichaud and Taylor Smith.

McWhorter helped the 200 relay team that finished fourth. Smith took second in the 500 freestyle. James Robichaud finished third in the 200 freestyle to help the Bruins score enough points.

Severna Park came up a little short in its bid to repeat as girls champion. Eleanor Roosevelt won the team title with 273 points, edging the Falcons (249), South River (244), Urbana (242.5) and Broadneck (235).

The Lloyd twins played a big role in Severna Park finishing second. Sarah Lloyd won the 100 butterfly (56.61) and the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 9.15 seconds). She also swam on two winning relay teams, the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle.

Emily Lloyd took the 50 freestyle (23.86) and the 100 freestyle (52.54). She swam with Sarah on the 200 medley relay team.

South River's Justin Vagts had a big night, winning the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, and taking second in the 100 backstroke. Tim Deklau of Arundel captured the 200 IM. Broadneck's Lauren Armstrong won the 100 backstroke.
