Arundel student faces charges in explosion

An Anne Arundel County high school student faces felony charges that he detonated a homemade explosive device in the parking lot of his school, authorities said yesterday.

The 16-year-old boy apparently tossed a "Drano bomb" into the bed of a fellow student's pickup truck outside Old Mill High School in Millersville about 9:10 a.m. The device was made in part from a water bottle filled with a liquid toilet declogger, said county schools spokesman Bob Mosier.

A county police officer stationed at the school saw the cloud of smoke, but there was no fire. No vehicles were damaged, and no one was hurt.

The student was charged as a juvenile with manufacturing a destructive device and possession of explosive material with the intent to create a destructive device - both felonies - as well as reckless endangerment and destruction to property.

Since the incident, the school was put on a precautionary alert yesterday after hearing of a "nonspecific threat," Mosier said.

A female student tipped off administrators about something she had heard about 10 a.m. The school was put on "code yellow," which means that the exterior doors are locked, and outdoor activities were canceled, but parents could still pick up their children for previously scheduled appointments, Mosier said.

The school was not locked down, and students at the high school and the two middle schools on the same campus were sent home with letters about the incident.

2 charged in armed robbery

Anne Arundel County police used police dogs, helicopters and a device that deflates automobile tires to capture two people after the robbery of a teenager at gunpoint at a Pasadena gas station, authorities said yesterday.

Police said a man robbed a teenage boy of cash as he left a BP Amoco station on Mountain Road, near Solley Road, about 8 p.m. Monday. The robber jumped into a waiting Ford Ranger pickup truck, and the driver sped away.

County police said they spotted the truck, pursued it and tried to stop it on Shaheed Drive. When the truck's driver made a U-turn, police continued to follow the truck through Severna Park and Glen Burnie. While northbound on Route 10, an officer deployed a spike strip across the road, which deflated one of the truck's left tires, forcing it to stop.

Police arrested the female driver, but the male passenger ran into nearby woods.

Marlanna Mae Rose, 25, of the 600 block of Military Ave. in Pikesville was charged with armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, theft, destruction of property and multiple traffic violations, police said.

Police dog units from Anne Arundel County, as well as helicopter units from the Maryland State Police and Howard County police searched the woods until the man was caught, authorities said.

Vashon L. Boone, 25, of no known address, was charged with armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, theft, destruction of property and felony handgun violations.
