THE WEEK AHEAD

The Baltimore Sun

No. 1 Johns Hopkins (1-0) Coming up: Vs. No. 9 Princeton, Saturday, 2:30 p.m., M&T; Bank Stadium; vs. UMBC, Tuesday, 7 p.m., Homewood Field.

Comment: The Blue Jays could use another four-goal effort from senior attackman Kevin Huntley against a stingy Tigers defense. Can sophomore goalkeeper Michael Gvozden outshine Princeton senior Alex Hewit? No. 5 Maryland (2-0) Coming up: At No. 2 Duke, Saturday, 5:30 p.m.; vs. Providence, Monday, 3 p.m., Ludwig Field.

Comment: Can the Terps' youngsters maintain their offensive firepower against a Blue Devils defense that has allowed 11 goals in two games? Senior attackman Matt Danowski leads Duke with six goals and 10 assists. No. 6 Navy (2-1) Coming up: Vs. Mount St. Mary's, Friday, 7 p.m., Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Comment: The Midshipmen were one overtime goal away from joining No. 13 Delaware as the only 3-0 teams in Division I. One statistic that pleases coach Richie Meade: Navy is winning the ground-ball competition 109-80. No. 14 Loyola (1-1) Coming up: Vs. No. 17 Penn State, Saturday, 2 p.m., Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.

Comment: The Greyhounds and Nittany Lions have each lost to No. 7 Notre Dame, but Penn State lost by six goals Sunday. Loyola, which lost by one goal, is getting inspired play from junior long-stick midfielder P.T. Ricci. No. 15 Towson (0-1) Coming up: Vs. No. 20 Denver, Sunday, 1 p.m., Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Comment: The Tigers looked rusty in Saturday's 13-8 loss to Loyola. More offense from the midfield will be necessary to beat the Pioneers, who nearly upset No. 10 North Carolina before losing by a goal. UMBC (0-2) Coming up: Vs. No. 20 Denver, Saturday, 1 p.m., UMBC Stadium; at No. 1 Johns Hopkins, Tuesday, 7 p.m., Homewood Field.

Comment: Eleven goals in two games is an alarming trend for a team that ranked ninth in the nation last year in scoring. The Retrievers are in danger of their second 0-3 start in the past four seasons. Mount St. Mary's (0-1) Coming up: At No. 6 Navy, Friday, 7 p.m., Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

Comment: The Mountaineers' ability to sustain an attack will determine whether they can upend the Midshipmen, who are surrendering just 5.6 goals a game. Freshman goalkeeper T.C. DiBartolo will be a marked man.
