Depth lifts Meade boys to crown

The Baltimore Sun

LANDOVER -- Meade used plenty of depth and many points in many places to win an outdoor track state championship last spring. That formula worked nicely again last night as the No. 2 Mustangs captured the Class 3A boys indoor track and field state title at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Mustangs relied heavily on being able to score throughout the meet to win the Class 4A outdoor title in May. They did the same thing last night, piling up 70 points to easily beat out Westlake (51), despite winning only one event.

"We just find ways to make things happen," Meade coach Nigel Holder said.

"This is something they've wanted all year."

Meade scored points in nine of the meet's 13 events, receiving big performances from four athletes.

Matthew Brinkley was the only Mustangs winner, taking the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 1.86 seconds, placing third in the 500, and running on the 1,600 relay (second) and 3,200 relay (third).

Justin Murdock finished second in the 55 and 300 and ran on the 1,600 relay and 800 relay (disqualified). Dahmar Smiles finished second in the 500 and fifth in the 55 hurdles and ran on the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Anya Uzoh took second in the high jump and third in the pole vault and ran on the 1,600 relay.

Joey Thompson turned in one of the meet's most dominating performances. The Howard senior tried to set a record in the 800 and came up a little short but still won by nearly 90 meters in 4:21.35.

Several other local athletes won, including Funmi Alabi of Long Reach, who set a meet record by winning the girls 55 in 7.00 seconds. Howard's Elyse Borisko captured the 3,200 in 11:39.61. The Western girls won the 800 relay in 1:44.32, edging Friendly by .05 of a second. Mervo's Kitra Stewart won the 500 in 1:16.92. The Long Reach girls won the 1,600 relay in 4:09.61.

Towson's Mason Campbell won the boys 3,200 in 9:36.99. Franklin's Cameron McDearmon took the shot put (49 feet, 3 inches).

Bethesda-Chevy Chase captured the girls title with 43 points, edging Westlake by one.
