Mt. Carmel, five seniors take back 'B' title

The Baltimore Sun

The starting five for the Mount Carmel boys basketball team knows what it's like to be on the winning and losing end of a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship game.

The five are all seniors, and they were instrumental two years ago in the Cougars' run to the title. Last season, they fell to St. Mary's in the championship game.

Yesterday afternoon at the Towson Center, the five - Troy Franklin, Dwayne Wheeler, Stanford McNair, Rummell King and Marc Anthony Franks - exacted the revenge they waited a year to get, as they defeated the Saints, 58-50, for the "B" crown.

"As soon as we knew we were playing St. Mary's, we had a smile on our faces," Franklin said. "We knew we were going to take [the championship] back."

Franklin, who will attend Towson in the fall, gave spectators a glimpse of what he can do on Towson's floor. He finished with 21 points (16 in the second half), six assists, four steals and two blocks.

But with No. 5 Mount Carmel (25-3) up 17-8 early in the second quarter, Franklin picked up his second foul. He was forced to sit until halftime, and St. Mary's (18-10) took advantage, taking a 24-23 halftime lead.

Franklin came out determined in the second half. He stole an inbounds pass, raced to the three-point line and nailed a shot while getting fouled. The resulting four-point play gave Mount Carmel a 29-24 lead.

At 6:55 in the quarter, he led a fast break and threw the ball up to Franks for an electric alley-oop dunk. On the next possession, Franklin drove the length of the court for a left-handed layup.

Nice Groce led St. Mary's with 19 points.

C Conference

Key School 51, St. Peter & Paul 42 -- Fahmy El Said had 18 points to help the Obezags (13-11) beat the Sabres (16-6) for the "C" title.
