Navy falls to Cornell in OT

Navy saw a late lead slip away and lost, 8-7, to host Cornell in overtime yesterday.

The Midshipmen (2-1) held a two-goal lead with less than a minute to play, but the Big Red (1-0) managed to tie the score. Chris Finn scored the unassisted game-winner 2:37 into overtime.

Nick Mirabito scored three goals for Navy, and Shane Durkin, Basil Daratsos, Patrick Moran and Brendan Connors had a goal apiece.

Villa Julie 13, St. Mary's 10 -- Steve Kazimer scored five goals and assisted on one to help the host Mustangs (1-0) defeat the Seahawks (1-1). Villa Julie took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but St. Mary's scored four unanswered goals in the second to move in front briefly. Kazimer scored three times in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Salisbury 10, Lynchburg 9 -- The Sea Gulls (2-0) extended their regular-season winning streak to 64 games by beating the Hornets (0-1). Greg Titus paced host Salisbury with four goals.

National men

No. 2 Duke 19, Vermont 7 -- The Blue Devils' starting attack unit of Matt Danowski, Zack Greer and Max Quinzani combined for 10 goals and nine assists to lead Duke (2-0) past the visiting Catamounts (0-1). Danowski finished with a game-high nine points on four goals and five assists; Greer added three goals and a career-high four assists. Quinzani matched his career-best scoring effort with three goals. Danowski moved into 13th all time in career scoring, with 272 points.

No. 3 Virginia 15, Stony Brook 13 -- The Cavaliers (2-0) scored the final two goals of the game to beat the visiting Seawolves (0-1). Danny Glading paced the Virginia offense with a career-high five goals and three assists for eight points, also a career best. Garrett Billings had his second consecutive game with three goals. Ryan Hughes tied his career high with four goals for Stony Brook. Freshman Jordan McBride also scored four times.

Massachusetts 8, No. 15 Hofstra 4 -- Junior attackman Tim Balise scored four goals and sophomore Bobby Hayes recorded three assists to lead the host Minutemen past the Pride in the season opener for both teams.

State women

No. 3 Maryland 18, Massachusetts 7 -- Senior Kelly Kasper scored a career-high six goals as the visiting Terrapins opened their season with a win over the Minutemen. Lauren Cohen and Dana Dobbie each scored three goals. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden produced career highs of four goals and five points.

George Mason 11, No. 12 Johns Hopkins 10 -- Despite four goals from sophomore Sam Schrum, the Blue Jays lost to the host Patriots for the first time in nearly five years. George Mason scored three unanswered goals to open the game, holding Hopkins scoreless for the first 22 minutes. Schrum put Hopkins on the board with her first of the season, but it was answered by a goal from Laura King a minute later and the Patriots led 4-1. Schrum's fourth goal gave Hopkins its first lead of the day, but the Patriots took the final lead with Madalyn Jamison's game-winner.

Towson 17, Mount St. Mary's 6 -- Sophomore midfielder Steph Taylor and freshman midfielder Ali Lathroum combined to score seven goals with two assists as the Tigers (1-0) won their season opener for the sixth straight year with a victory over the visiting Mountaineers (0-2).
