Cougar swimmers aim for state win

Fallston used its consistency and depth to sweep last weekend's Class 3A-2A-1A North regional swimming championships at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center a week after doing the same in the county meet.

The Cougars easily won the boys title, posting 400.5 points to beat out North Harford (307). Fallston's girls captured the championship with 366 points, also beating out the Hawks (314). The boys will now try to repeat as state champions in tomorrow's title meet at College Park.

Jack Gottschalk captured both the 50 and 500 freestyle and swam on two winning relay teams. Bradley Huppenthal won the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and swam on two victorious relay teams. Paul Zoli added two relay victories and finished first in the 200 freestyle and second in the 100 freestyle.

For the girls, Emily Wagner won the 100 breaststroke, took second in the 200 individual medley and was on two winning relay teams. Annie Olesczuk won the 100 backstroke, finished second in the 500 freestyle and swam on one first-place relay team.

Having a chance to sweep at the state meet means a lot to the Fallston seniors, whose performances have been as close to perfect as possible during their careers. They have posted a 52-0 record and won four county titles during their time at Fallston.

John Carroll wrestling -- John Carroll continued its strong season with a fifth-place finish at the 14th Maryland Independent Schools tournament last weekend at McDonogh. The host Eagles dominated the event but the Patriots came away with three third-place finishers -- Matt Bodt (112 pounds), Ryan Owens (130) and Ethan Reese (189). That helped John Carroll get fifth place, the highest the Patriots have ever finished in the tournament. In addition, nine John Carroll wrestlers are headed to the national meet this weekend at Lehigh University, up from last year's five wrestlers.

UCBAC championships -- The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference's basketball title games are set, as the Aberdeen boys and Fallston girls will try to repeat as champions. Fallston will play Edgewood in the 5:30 p.m. girls championship game, and the Aberdeen-Elkton title game follows at 7. Both games are at Harford Community College. In wrestling, Aberdeen won the Susquehanna Division with a 6-0 record. The UCBAC tournament was scheduled for this weekend, weather permitting. Rising Sun won the Chesapeake Division and went on to finish second in the Class 2A-1A state dual meet competition last week, falling to Owings Mills in the title match.

State indoor track -- Indoor track isn't an official sport in Harford County, but some school teams, such as C. Milton Wright's girls, do it on their own. After winning the Class 4A state championship in cross country in the fall, the Mustangs girls went to the state meet at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex and finished 20th overall with three points. Sara Bailey (fifth, 3,200) and Veronique Williams (sixth, 500) scored the Mustangs' points. Fallston will be at the Class 3A state meet tomorrow.
