Donn Hill keeps getting better. The Bel Air junior guard-forward was one of the county's top scorers last season, and he's taken his game to another level this year.
Hill averages 21.4 points per game, and despite being 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, pulls down 10.6 rebounds per game. He's got a knack for finding offensive rebounds and knowing how to get himself in the right position. Hill showed that Feb. 15 by scoring 33 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in Bel Air's win over Edgewood.
He is one of the most dominant players in the county and combines with Lionel Perkins to give Bel Air two top-scoring threats. The Bobcats ended the regular season by winning five games in a row and could make some noise in the playoffs.
How difficult is it being double-teamed this year whenever you touch the ball?
It's very difficult because last year I always saw man-to-man. This year, I get double-teams and that means that somebody's open all the time. I just have to find them and get the ball. I have to work harder now.
After such a good sophomore year, what skills did you work on to improve?
I really worked on my strength in the weight room with Coach [Nate] Weigl during the summer. Also, I did a lot of conditioning work with coach to try and improve my speed. It's helped a lot. Last year, I really wasn't that quick, but this year I'm faster.
How good was the Feb. 15 game against Edgewood when you finished with 33 points and 17 rebounds?
That's the best game I ever had. My coach said I had 10 rebounds in the first half. I was surprised. I really didn't know my stats until after the game.
What's been the turning point for the team this season?
In the first part of the season, I don't think we were focused. But everybody's been stepping up now during our five-game winning streak. I think 13-7 is good for us, and we want to do more in the playoffs.
What are your goals for next season?
I just want to average more rebounds. I'd like to average 20 points a game, but I'd like to get to 16 or 17 rebounds a game.
How are you so successful rebounding as a 6-foot-1 guard?
I think because I get to the right places at the right time. I cut in between the bigger people and try to get the rebounds. I get a lot of offensive rebounds and that helps us. Second-chance points, second-chance opportunities -- they're important for us.
Who's your favorite basketball player?
I like Allen Iverson. He is so dedicated to playing the game of basketball and he goes hard every night. That's what I like to do.
How far can your team go in the playoffs this season?
Hopefully, we can get to College Park [for the state semifinals], but we're going to have to work hard in practice every day and don't let up. Everybody is going to have to keep stepping up. We've done that the past five games.
What's in your iPod?
I like to listen to Lil' Wayne and Young Jeezy. They're real hot right now. They're the hottest records out right now.
What are you looking at as a major in college?
I'm really not sure right now, but I think I'd like to major in something like history. My favorite subject is U.S. history and studying things from the past because I like to learn about things from the past. Also I like Spanish because I have a good teacher.
