Montessori to hold education sessions

Montessori International Children's House is hosting a series of informational sessions on Montessori education at its Annapolis campus, 1641 Winchester Road.

This seminar series, part of the celebration of the centenary of the Montessori movement, includes the following: Session 1: Maria Montessori: Her Life and Work -- 9 a.m. Thursday Session 2: Expectations: The Partnership Between Home & School -- 7 p.m. March 6 Session 3: Montessori in the Home -- 9 a.m. April 3 Session 4: Doorway to Lifelong Learning -- 9 a.m. April 17

Nancy Anselm, MICH's educational director, will host the sessions. The public is welcome. There is no fee, but reservations are required.

Awards for female AACC students

The Anne Arundel County branch of the American Association of University Women is offering financial awards for one year to female Anne Arundel Community College students transferring to an accredited four-year college.

Two awards, each in the amount of $2,250, will be paid directly to the four-year institution.

Applicants must:

Be a current female student or recent graduate of AACC, who will be eligible for junior standing at an accredited college or university and is pursing a bachelor's degree;

Be a resident of Anne Arundel County;

Have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher;

Show evidence of financial need;

Show evidence of professionalism.

Frostburg students going to China

Three Anne Arundel County natives attending Frostburg State University are heading to China next month as part of a tour with the school's chamber choir.

Lane Conklin and Erin Drenning of Pasadena and Charlene Ferguson of Harwood will be in Beijing and Hunan Province March 6 through 14 to give performances at sites including the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, Changsha's City Center and Hunan Normal University, where FSU is laying the groundwork for educational opportunities and exchanges between the two institutions.

Conklin is a junior studying music and vocal performance. Drenning is a sophomore majoring in psychology. Ferguson is a junior majoring in music education.

Portis named to AACC post

Terry D. Portis has been named the new director of the Center on Aging for Anne Arundel Community College's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

In his new role, the Frederick resident will oversee open enrollment for baby boomers who will be retooling and looking for guidance and new job opportunities.

Portis comes from the Hearing Loss Association of America, where he served as executive director for five years.

Naval Academy pro fessor honored

Gale A. Mattox, a professor in the Naval Academy's political science department, has been named the Fulbright-Dow Distinguished Research Chair at the Roosevelt Institute in the Netherlands for 2009.

She will spend the spring semester of the 2008-2009 academic year in residence in the Netherlands engaged in scholarship and professional development.

Mattox teaches classes at the academy on international relations, Europe and NATO, and national security affairs. She has been a Bosch Fellow in Germany, a NATO Research Fellow, and Fulbright scholar.
