Baltimore city homicide detectives were hoping yesterday to question a man from the New York area in connection with last week's fatal shooting at an off-campus apartment complex occupied by Morgan State University students.
"There are several people who they are interested in talking to, including one suspect from the New York area," said Sterling Clifford, a Police Department spokesman.
Clifford said that no arrests had been made, and he declined to provide details on whether the suspect is a Morgan student or has ever attended the university.
The police spokesman said the shooting resulted from "a fight that had begun earlier in the day between two groups of people."
The victim, Jeff Payne of Laurel, attended a party at the Morgan View Apartments with his roommate Thursday, according to two family members. Payne, 22, was not a Morgan student, but the party was hosted at the privately run student housing complex on Morgan State University property.
Payne's friends exchanged heated words with another group at the party, according to family members. Police said a gunman burst into the party and shot Payne, who was pronounced dead at a hospital early Friday.
