Four more candidates have submitted their names to be Howard County's next state's attorney:
Domenic F. Iamele, 63, is a longtime Baltimore defense and personal injury attorney in practice with his son. He was an assistant state's attorney in Baltimore for five years in the early 1970s, according to his Web site.
Gary Stewart Peklo, 61, who moved to the county in 1972, practices civil litigation, including wills, and some criminal law as a sole practitioner in Ellicott City, and was an assistant state's attorney in Howard County from 1975 to 1978, he said. He applied for appointment to a county Circuit Court vacancy in 2005 but was not selected.
Edward Fisk Dyer, 75, of North Laurel said he is a retired electrical engineer and lawyer who has had a law degree since 1976. A resident of Gorman Road since the 1960s, he said he has practiced law sporadically while devoting most of his energy to a career in science and business.
Nakiya E. Whitaker is listed as a member of the Maryland Bar Association since 2005, but no other information about her was immediately available.
Timothy J. McCrone resigned as Howard County's state's attorney in December when he was appointed a Circuit Court judge. He is running for a full judicial term this year.
Three county circuit judges, led by Judge Lenore R. Gelfman, are to choose his permanent replacement, who will serve until the 2010 statewide election. Friday was the deadline for candidates who want to be considered for the appointment.
Two officials working in the state's attorney's office are competing for the top job.
Dario J. Broccolino, 63, currently the interim state's attorney and one of two deputies under McCrone, entered the contest last week. Broccolino, a former prosecutor in Baltimore City, ran for state's attorney in 1994, losing to Republican Marna McLendon. She then hired him as her deputy in 1999.
Lara C. Weathersbee, a 13-year Howard prosecutor who heads the juvenile division, has support from McCrone and County Executive Ken Ulman. McCrone recused himself from voting on his replacement after it was revealed in The Sun that he had told members of his staff that he favored her for the job and hoped they would support her, too.
Also running is former Del. Neil F. Quinter, 45, a former assistant attorney general and Capital Hill staffer who served one term in the General Assembly. No date has been set for the judges' decision.
