Teen responsibility focus of session

"Whose Homework is it Anyway?: Promoting Academic Self-Reliance during the Teen Years" will be presented at 7 p.m. today at Long Reach High School.

Brad Sachs, a Columbia-based psychologist, will talk to parents about students learning to handle responsibility independently. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period.

The event is being sponsored by HC DrugFree, a nonprofit organization based in the county.

WomenHeart to meet today

WomenHeart, a support group for women with heart disease, will meet at 10 a.m. today in the Nordstrom's cafe on the second floor of The Mall in Columbia.

Sports Hall set for nominations

County Executive Ken Ulman has announced that nomination forms are available for the county's 2008 Community Sports Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Department of Recreation and Parks.

The hall celebrates people who have gained prominence or, as athletes, coaches, managers, officials or behind-the-scenes contributors, have made substantial contributions to community recreational sports in Howard County.

The deadline for nominations is March 17.

Nominees must have lived in Howard County while they made their contributions to sports in the county or have devoted their efforts to community sports primarily in the county.

Forms are available at 410-313-4711, at Howard County library branches or at www.howardcountymd.gov/RAP. They must be postmarked by March 17 and mailed or delivered to Recreation and Parks Sports Hall of Fame, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia 21046-1677.

The Community Sports Hall of Fame at Recreation and Parks Headquarters is open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Youths to go hungry for world famine

GenXaret Inc., a faith-based organization pursuing Christian youth ministry in Howard County, will host more than 200 young people from area churches who are expected to participate in the 30 Hour Famine, an international effort to create awareness of hunger in the world and raise money to fight it.

Youths will fast, learn about hunger in the world and participate in community service Friday and Saturday.

Library plans 'Evening in Stacks'

The Howard County Library will hold its 11th annual gala fundraiser, "Evening in the Stacks: Walk the Red Carpet," from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at the east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

Guests can sip martinis while bidding on silent auction items, dine on food provided by the Elkridge Furnace Inn, brush past paparazzi and listen to a film panel that features critic Ann Hornaday. Big Tubba Mista will provide music for dancing.

Tickets are $100. Proceeds will benefit the library's educational initiatives.

Jewish group offers caregivers support

Jewish Family Services in Howard County offers a support group for adults who are caring for an elderly family member or friend. The group meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Federation offices, Century Plaza 1000, 10630 Little Patuxent Parkway, Suite 401, Columbia.

The group, which will provide an opportunity for caregivers to share concerns and resources, will meet March 10, April 14, May 12 and June 9. The cost is $5 a session.

Soroptimists plan to announce awards

Soroptimist International of Howard County will hear progress reports on its annual awards projects at a monthly dinner to be held at 6:15 p.m. tomorrow at Caf? de Paris, 8808 Centre Park Drive, Columbia.

Winners will be announced for the group's three awards: The Women's Opportunity Award, helping women heads of household who support their families; the Violet Richardson Award, recognizing community service by a young volunteer, ages 14-17; and Making a Difference for Women Award, honoring a woman who, through personal or professional effort, makes a difference in the lives of women and girls.

An Awards Banquet honoring the winners will be held in April.

Soroptimist, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women, works to improve the lives of women and girls around the world.

Search to begin for CA president

The Columbia Association's board of directors has invited residents to share their thoughts on the background, experience and qualifications the next CA president should have.

The search for the next president will begin soon, and the board is requesting suggestions for a job description.
