College soccer scholarships in Anne Arundel County are rare, even at schools like Chesapeake, which has a rich tradition in the sport.
So, when the Cougars' Chris Saul signed a national letter of intent two weeks ago to accept a full Division I scholarship to Longwood University in Farmville, Va., it was noteworthy. Saul is just the third Chesapeake soccer player to receive a Division I scholarship.
A two-time second-team All-State forward, Saul scored six goals and had eight assists to finish his three-year varsity career with 23 goals and 18 assists. Saul was one of only four Anne Arundel County boys soccer players to earn Division I scholarships. The others are Michael Rose of Severna Park from Notre Dame; Jason McCarron of Arundel from UMBC; and Tom Schaffler of Archbishop Spalding from Maryland.
Arundel football -- The Wildcats were in the spotlight a week ago at the 54th Annapolis Touchdown Club Football Banquet. The Wildcats became the first county school to sweep the three high school awards. Arundel received the Jerry Mears Memorial Trophy as the High School Team of the Year after going 13-1 and finishing as the Class 4A state finalist to Quince Orchard. Coach Chuck Markiewicz, who played for the late Mears at Arundel, accepted the award from 1984 Arundel grad and 1983 All-Metro lineman Dean D'Camera. Arundel's state record-setting quarterback, Nick Elko, received the Rhodes Trophy as the county's Player of the Year, and his teammate, John MacDonald, took home the Al Laramore Memorial Award as the county's Lineman of the Year.
Quick hits -- Broadneck football coach Jeff Herrick announced that two more of his players will play college football: All-County center Ryan Barber and All-County kicker Chappy Cole, each of whom committed to Salisbury.
