Marguerite D. Sargent, a homemaker who enjoyed flying and sailing, died Thursday of pneumonia at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. The longtime Howard County resident was 88.
Marguerite Dumeste Ridgely was born in Frederick and raised in Sunshine in Montgomery County.
She was a 1937 graduate of Sherwood High School and after graduating from Strayer's Business College in Washington, worked as an office manager for the federal government and later for The Washington Post.
After marrying Warren Gooch Sargent, an architect, in 1950, the couple built their home on Ridgely family property near Glenwood.
She earned her private pilot's license and enjoyed flying Cessnas that she and her husband owned on trips to Canada, Florida and Chicago.
Mrs. Sargent later learned to sail and, with her husband, enjoyed sailing the Triomphe, their 45-foot motor sailer.
"They sailed the bay as well as taking deepwater voyages to Montauk Point, N.Y., and Cape May [N.J.]," said her daughter, Louise Annette R. Sargent of Brookeville.
Mrs. Sargent was an active member of the Glenwood Community Club, the Cattail River Garden Club and the Terra Mariae Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, where she was national defense chairman.
Her interests included genealogy, gardening and bird-watching.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Union Chapel in Glenwood.
In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include a son, Thomas Warren Sargent of Brookeville; and two grandchildren.
