10-year solid waste plan to be focus of hearing

The county Department of Public Works will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday to review the county's proposed 10-year solid waste management plan.

The hearing will be at the County Council chambers, Old Courthouse, 400 Washington Ave., Towson. Attendees must use the Chesapeake Avenue entrance. A public information session will precede the hearing.

The draft plan is available for review online at www.baltimore countymd.gov/recycling and at public library branches. Written comments received before March 28 will be considered during the revision process. Comments may be sent to the Director of Public Works, Room 307, 111 W. Chesapeake Ave., Towson 21204.

Essex

Mfume to discuss blacks in politics

Kweisi Mfume, a former congressman and NAACP president, will discuss "African-American Involvement in Politics" tomorrow at the Community College of Baltimore County's Essex campus.

The lecture, part of the CCBC Essex Spotlight Speaker Series, will be at 12:20 p.m. in the B Building Theatre, 7201 Rossville Blvd. It is free to the public.

Mfume, a former member of the Baltimore City Council, served three terms in Congress. He also was president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for nine years.

Oregon Ridge

Maple sugar event again this weekend

Oregon Ridge Nature Center will hold the second of its Maple Sugar Weekends this year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville.

Visitors can hike to tap maple trees, collect the sap and watch at the Sugar House as the sap is boiled into syrup. The program is free for all ages.

The syrup can be used at the center's pancake and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon March 1 and 2. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Glen Arm

Talk to discuss Alzheimer's disease

The Glen Meadows Retirement Community will sponsor a free talk on Alzheimer's disease at 3 p.m. Thursday at 11630 Glen Arm Road.

Meredith Heinen, education coordinator of the Alzheimer's Association, Baltimore chapter, will show a film and discuss the disease.

The talk is open to the public.

Aid available at senior centers

County senior centers and library branches will offer income-tax preparation and filing assistance to senior citizens and low-income residents.

Cockeysville Senior Center will offer the AARP TaxAide program on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 10 at 10535 York Road. Appointments may be made at 410-887-7694.

The help also is available Saturdays at the Arbutus library, 1581 Sulphur Spring Road. Appointments may be made at 410-887- 1451.

Public affairs show available online

The county government's 30-minute public affairs talk show, Hello Baltimore County, is now available on the county's Web site at www.baltimorecoun tymd.gov/go/hellobc.

The program also is shown on Comcast Cable Channel 25 at 9 p.m. Monday; 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Tuesday; 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday; 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday; and 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday.

Towson

Forum to discuss immigration

The county League of Women Voters will hold a panel discussion on "Immigration: The Local Picture" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Road.
