Howard County police have released the identities of a man who was fatally shot early Saturday at a motel in Laurel and the officer he shot and injured.

The suspect was identified as Aaron Mason Lowry, 31, of Washington, who was wanted on several warrants, including the attempted murder of a Washington police officer the day before and robbery. The officer, Cpl. Cal Bowers, a Prince George's County sheriff's deputy, suffered a gunshot wound in the abdomen. He was in serious but stable condition last weekend at Maryland Shock Trauma Center after undergoing surgery Saturday.

Federal marshals attempted to arrest Lowry on several warrants at the Econo Lodge in the 9700 block of U.S. 1 around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Lowry fired at the officers when they entered his room, hitting Bowers, police said. Officers returned fire, killing Lowry.

Three other people who were in the room were taken into custody by Howard County police. Authorities expect to charge them with drug and weapons charges, police said.
