Michael Beggins picked a good time to score his first college goal. Navy won the faceoff to start overtime and took five shots before Beggins, a junior midfielder, scored the game-winner and helped the Midshipmen defeat host Ohio State, 8-7.
Navy (2-0) opened the scoring with a man-up goal by Tim Paul 46 seconds into the game and extended its lead to three on goals by Gregory Clement and Basil Daratsos.
The sixth-ranked Midshipmen scored twice in the first 1:44 of the second half to take a 6-2 lead. Paul scored with 14:07 left, followed by Nick Mirabito's man-up score less than a minute later. The Buckeyes (0-1) then went on a four-goal run to tie the game. Ohio State senior Kevin Buchanan scored three goals, and his last tied the game at the end of regulation.
No. 16 Delaware 15, No. 17 UMBC 7 -- Despite three goals from Ryan Smith, the Retrievers (0-1) lost to the Blue Hens (2-0) in Neptune Beach, Fla. UMBC outshot Delaware 40-37, but Blue Hens senior goalie Tom Scherr made 15 saves, several against outstanding Retrievers chances. The game was a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinal won by Delaware. An announced 4,500 attended the contest, which benefited the Wounded Warrior project.
Salisbury 20, Virginia Wesleyan 7 -- The Sea Gulls (1-0) took a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and continued to dominate the Marlins (0-1). Mike von Kamecke, Matt Hickman, Kylor Berkman and Patrick Bonanno each scored three times. Salisbury had a 69-22 advantage in shots.
National men
No. 2 Duke 16, No. 15 Bucknell 4 -- All-Americans Matt Danowski and Zach Greer combined for 13 points to lead the host Blue Devils past the Bison in the season openers for both teams at Koskinen Stadium. Danowski had two goals and five assists, and Greer had four goals and two assists for Duke, which returned eight starters from last year's squad that finished 17-3 and lost by one goal to Johns Hopkins in the national championship game. Austin Winter had a goal and an assist for the Bison, while Tim Brandau, Joe Mele and Nick Marks also scored. Freshman Ryan Klipstein picked up his first career assist on Brandau's goal. Duke's 16 goals were the most by a Bison opponent since a 16-11 loss at Villanova in 2004.
No. 10 North Carolina 15, Bellarmine 2 -- The Tar Heels (1-0) trailed 2-1 after the first quarter before outscoring the Knights 6-0 in both the second and third quarters. Five players scored two goals for North Carolina.
State women
Lehigh 10, Mount St. Mary's 9 -- A crease violation nullified what appeared to be the game-tying score, causing the Mountaineers to lose to the Mountain Hawks in both teams' season opener. Katelyn Catanese scored four goals and Rebecca Douglass had three assists to lead Mount St. Mary's.
Salisbury 24, Hood 0 -- Sue Ackermann's game-high four goals helped the Sea Gulls (1-0, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) crush the Blazers (0-1, 0-1). Salisbury played three goalies, but none faced a shot.
