Arrest -- Howard County police responding to a report that a man was assaulting a woman in a car parked near Normandy Lane in Ellicott City early Wednesday detained a man and learned that he was wanted by Baltimore police in connection with a homicide. Detective Vince Stevenson of the Regional Warrant Apprehension Task Force said Leroy Wooden, 29, of the 500 block of N. Milton Ave., was wanted on a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in the shooting of Barry Newman, 29, of the 2100 block of Ramsey St. Newman was shot Aug. 31 in the 200 block of S. Calhoun St. Stevenson said Newman died Sept. 7 at Maryland Shock Trauma Center and that Wooden was being held without bail at Central Booking and Intake Center pending a bail review hearing. A motive for the shooting was not known.

Shooting -- Police were seeking a man who fired shots from a handgun into a Saturn parked on the lot at the Westside Shopping Center in the 2400 block of Frederick Ave. about 5:10 p.m. yesterday, striking the male occupant in the back and an arm. The victim, whose name was not released, ran into a nearby Rite Aid pharmacy, where he was found by police. The victim was taken by a city Fire Department ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. His condition was not available. Anyone knowing the gunman's identity is asked to call the district's detective unit at 410-887-2488.

Carjacking -- A man, 45, was paying for gas at a Texaco station in the 7500 block of Belair Road about 9 p.m. Tuesday when he observed two men attempting to steal his blue 1998 Saturn. When the motorist approached the pair, one of them struck him in the face before they drove off in the car. Police said the vehicle has unknown temporary tags.
