Gaels clinch two titles with win

Mount St. Joseph needed only one victory yesterday to win two titles.

The top-ranked Gaels (25-2) defeated Towson Catholic, 71-62, to clinch the regular-season basketball titles for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League.

Eric Atkins paced Mount St. Joseph with 22 points.

The fifth-ranked Owls were led by Brandon Greene's game-high 25 points.

Greene got the better of his matchup with the Gaels' Henry Sims, a Georgetown recruit, who scored nine points and was in foul trouble for most of the game.

No. 4 St. Frances 72, Cardinal Gibbons 71, OT -- Wayne Sparrows made a three-pointer late in overtime to lead the Panthers past the host Crusaders.

No. 10 Loyola 62, No. 14 John Carroll 55 -- Matt Rum's game-high 16 points were enough to lead the Dons (16-7) past the Patriots (18-10). Isaiah Philmore, Malcolm McMillian and Jakub Kusmieruk each scored 12 points for John Carroll.

Calvert Hall 66, Archbishop Spalding 48 -- Nate Boone made three three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points in the Cardinals' win over the Cavaliers.

Girls basketball

Roland Park 39, Notre Dame Prep 34 -- The Reds (7-18) did not take a lead until the fourth quarter, but they were able to hang on for the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland first-round playoff victory. Lauren Carter and Lynette Jackson scored 12 points apiece for Roland Park, which made eight of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter.
