The faces change, but some things stay the same for Loyola.

With first-place finishes in four of the 11 events, the Dons captured their 15th consecutive MIAA A Conference swimming championship yesterday with 357 points.

McDonogh (248 points) finished second and Calvert Hall (244) was third.

"Swimming is a team sport, and that depth is why we win," Dons coach Keith Schertle said. "We feel that ninth-place swimmer is just as important as first or second because all those ninths add up.

The Dons won the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard freestyle (junior Greg Pelton), 100-yard breaststroke (junior Sean Roddy) and 400-yard freestyle relay en route to the title.

In the final event, Loyola's 400-yard freestyle relay team set a meet record with a time of 3 minutes, 9.26 seconds.

McDonogh's Giles Smith won three of his four races (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly in 51.07 seconds and 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:28.21) and finished third in the other.

Smith set the meet record in the 50 freestyle earlier in the day and then set it again in the finals with a time of 20.95 seconds.

"That was a goal I set in my freshman year," said Smith, a junior .

Mount St. Joseph's Ryan Shea broke his own record from last season with a time of 1:40.85 in the 200-yard freestyle, and McDonogh freshman Drew Cosgarea set a meet record (4:31.90) in the 500-yard freestyle.

St. Paul's Austin Surhoff was the other multiple winner, taking the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.47) and 100-yard backstroke (51.16). "I expected to do well," Surhoff said. "It's still a thrill to win at this level, though."

In the B Conference, Gilman - which moved down from the A Conference last season - captured the team title with 269 points. Severn (228) was second and Archbishop Spalding (213) third.
