Girl, 16, man, 78, die in separate wrecks

A 16-year-old Westminster girl died yesterday when her car crossed over the center line and collided with another vehicle.

Alexandra Mary Kowalczyk of the 200 block of Pleasant Valley Road was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police at the Westminster barracks. Troopers said they responded to the accident scene at 11:28 a.m. and determined that Kowalczyk had been driving north on Route 27, south of Albert Rill Road.

Authorities said the 1998 Volkswagen Cabrio driven by Kowalczyk crossed the double-yellow line and collided with a 1992 Plymouth Laser driven by a 17-year-old girl. Police did not identify the other driver, who was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Also in Carroll County, a 78-year-old man was killed Friday night in a crash in Mount Airy, state police said.

Welborn Higgs of Mount Airy was driving a 2000 Jeep Laredo east on Watersville Road about 10:30 p.m. when he was struck by a 2006 Pontiac. The Pontiac driver, a 16-year-old boy, had driven through the light on southbound Route 27, police said. Higgs died at the scene.

Blaze hits store at Old Town Mall

A fire raced through a music store at the site of the Old Town Mall early yesterday, killing a man who authorities believe was homeless and sleeping inside the building.

Fire crews responding to a call about 5 a.m. found the first two floors of Your Super Music in the 500 block of N. Gay St. engulfed in flames, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a city Fire Department spokesman.

Before a full search could be conducted of the three-story brick building, commanders ordered an evacuation because the fire became too intense, Cartwright said.

The fire was extinguished about an hour after crews arrived. About 7:30 a.m., firefighters found a man under a pile of debris on the first floor.
