College trustees will meet Tuesday

The board of trustees of Harford Community College will meet in open session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Chesapeake Center Board Room.

Anyone wishing to speak at the meeting must complete a request form and return it to marketing and public relations before the meeting.

Schools announce three closing days

Harford County public schools will be closed Tuesday for the primary election.

Elementary schools will close at 1 p.m. Friday for teachers' planning time.

All schools and offices will be closed Feb. 18 for Presidents Day.

Cecil College offers diversity series

Cecil College will present "The Changing Face of Diversity in the 21st Century" speakers series from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Milburn Stone Theatre on the North East campus.

Tamara Draut will cover topics related to the economic divide in the United States in "Falling Behind: The Economic Challenges Confronting a New Generation."

Draut, author of Strapped: Why America's 20- and 30-Somethings Can't Get Ahead, is included in the anthology Inequality Matters: The Growing Economic Divide in America and Its Poisonous Consequences.

She oversees the research, policy and advocacy work on economic security issues at Demos, a nonprofit organization in New York.

Draut will address what has been called the death of the middle class and the widening gap between rich and poor by looking at the historical, political and economic reasons for it.

A book signing will be held after the lecture.

Valentine's Day show scheduled

The Cecil College Performing Arts Program will hold a Valentine-themed "Eat Your Arts!" series from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in the lobby of Elkton Station at 107 Railroad Ave.

"Heart's Desire" will feature classical and contemporary music by flutist Hope Woodworth, vocalist Zane Ewing, harpist Madelyn Petersen, saxophonist Jordan Pierce, bassist Max Drapeau, pianist Eric Nothern and guitarist Nate Paruch.

In celebration of Laura Higgins Palmer's Regional Reflections exhibit, Drawn to Dance: No Fixed Points, on display in the Elkton Station Gallery, Liz Malloy and David Hardison will become the first dancers to participate in an Eat Your Arts! performance.

Applicants sought for scholarships

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.'s Xi Delta Omega Chapter of Harford County is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program.

Available scholarships for college-bound students are: Sara E. Roye Memorial Scholarship, $1,500; Mildred G. Stansbury Memorial Scholarship, $1,000; Book Scholarship, $500; and Athletic Scholarship, $500.

The deadline is March 28.

Nominations open for teacher award

The Harford County school system has announced that nomination forms for the 2008-2009 teacher of the year award are available online at www.hcps.org.

Part of the Maryland State Teacher of the Year Award program, the county award honors a teacher with outstanding qualities who is considered a model educator.

Nominees must have five years' teaching experience. Nominations must include examples of the teacher's impact on students, other teachers and the community. Letters of support are required.

Deadline for nominations is 4 p.m. March 28.
