Last year I met a young woman who had lost her brother in the war in Iraq. Although obviously grieved over her family's loss, she spoke proudly of her brother's service and the ultimate sacrifice he made on our behalf.

In relaying the events of his return home, she described her family's deep disappointment that the Army had not presented them with his Purple Heart. They had hoped they would have it in time for his memorial service.

They called Congressman Gilchrest's office to see if he could help in this matter. She explained that despite the congressman's continuous efforts, the deadline approached with no success.

To her family's surprise, just prior to the memorial service she said Congressman Gilchrest came and offered them the Purple Heart he received from his service in Vietnam.

Months after this conversation I bumped into Gilchrest's chief aide and relayed the conversation I had with the young woman. To my surprise, Gilchrest had never said anything to him or anyone else about his kind act.

Whether we have agreed with every vote Wayne Gilchrest has cast, we have always known that he has represented us with the utmost integrity and character. It has been extremely difficult to watch his opponents' incessant attacks on these very qualities.

Wayne Gilchrest's actions speak far louder than their words.
