Junior Lindsay Smith played other sports, but she never ran before coming to C. Milton Wright.

Smith decided to try cross country and track as a freshman and eventually developed into a solid distance runner, one who helped the Mustangs win the Class 4A state title in cross country last fall.

She also competes on the indoor and outdoor track teams.

Smith, who is a member of the Varsity Club and the National Honor Society, hopes to run in college.

Why did you take up running in high school?

I took up running because I always loved to run. I played soccer for many years and my favorite part was always the running around the field and running to the ball. When I came to high school, I was back and forth on trying out for the soccer team or running cross country. When I got information on running for C. Milton Wright in the eighth grade, it made the decision really easy. Running was really the best choice for me.

How difficult was it to get used to the training and daily grind?

At first, it was definitely challenging to get into the everyday training. It took about three weeks until I started to feel really comfortable. But, from Day One, I knew I was going to stick with it and love it.

Besides soccer, what sports did you play before starting to run?

I played soccer, basketball, and I rode horses. Running is now the main sport in my life. I devote a lot of my time into the sport every day.

What goals do you have for yourself while running at C. Milton Wright?

I really want to reach my full potential. I want to break 5:20 for the mile, and cut time off my two-mile personal record. I want to continue to push myself harder each race to get the best outcome.

What's been your best moment while running for the school?

I would have to say that my best moment was right after our coach told us that we had won the state championship this year in cross country. We had been working hard all season, and when it paid off at the state meet, it was an amazing feeling. I was so excited and proud of our team and the hard work each one of us put into the year.

What's in your iPod right now?

I have a lot of country music on my iPod. I also have some pop and Christian rock.

What did you think of the Super Bowl last weekend?

I loved the Super Bowl. I am already looking forward to next year's. I thought the game kept you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I was rooting for the Patriots. I really wanted to see them have a perfect season, but the game was really exciting, and I'm not too upset with the outcome.

What will your major be in college, and what do you want to do for a career?

I really don't know what I want to do yet in college. I have had so many ideas. I've thought about being a teacher, doctor and a news broadcaster. I know that whatever I do, I want to be helping others and living my life to the fullest.
