Coventry Health profit $184 million
Coventry Health Care, the Bethesda-based HMO operator, posted earnings yesterday of $184.4 million, or $1.18 a share, for the quarter that ended Dec. 31. That was in line with analysts' expectations and compares with $156.1 million, or 97 cents a share, earned in the fourth quarter of 2006. Revenue for the quarter jumped 43.6 percent over the year-earlier period, to $2.5 billion from $1.7 billion.

Chindex profit put at $3.9 million
Chindex international Inc., the Bethesda company that provides Western health services and products in China, showed yesterday improving profitability, posting earnings of $3.9 million, or 42 cents a common share, for the fiscal third quarter ending Dec. 31. That compares with earnings of $679,000, or 9 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter. Roberta Lipson, chief executive officer, attributed the improvement to inpatient and outpatient growth in Beijing and Shanghai.
