The Baltimore Sun

LAURA ANNE PURTELL, a Registered Nurse, died at home on Sunday, February 3rd. She was 62. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio; in 1972, she married Michael Purtell before moving to Baltimore, Maryland. She raised their two children in Catonsville and Ellicott City. Above all, Ms. Purtell was a loving and dedicated mother. Laura worked nights, spending her days involved in her children's schools and activities. Always volunteering as class mom and trip chaperone, Ms. Purtell was the first to cheer in the audience or sidelines of all events. A dedicated Registered Nurse for over 40 years, her greatest compassion was caring for people during their times of need. During her long career, she enhanced the quality of care to many patients' lives through her well honed skills and bright smile. Ms. Purtell intuitively connected with the sensitivity of animals. The family dog, Corky, always gravitated to her side and under her step. In 2000, after her faithful four legged friend's passing, she rescued an abused, mixed breed dog from the Howard County Animal Shelter. She nurtured Buddy Woof into a loving, loyal companion. Services will be held at 4 pm, Friday (2/8) at the Amherst House, 7251 Eden Brook Drive in Columbia. She is survived by her son, Colin Purtell, of Columbia; daughter, Rebecca Purtell, of Philadelphia; brother, John Draus, of Paramus, NJ; sister, Susan Draus, of Playa del Rey, CA.
